Squishy toys are built to be handled — that's the entire point of them. But soft, foam-based materials do need a little more care than a hard plastic figure if you want yours to stay looking good for years instead of months.

Cleaning

Most squishies are fine with a gentle spot clean. A soft cloth, a small amount of mild soap, and lukewarm water will lift dirt and oils without damaging the surface. Rub gently in a circular motion rather than scrubbing — squishy foam can tear or dent permanently if you press too hard while wet.

• Avoid fully submerging a squishy in water — foam can absorb moisture and take a long time to dry out from the inside, which leads to a musty smell or mold over time.
• Skip harsh cleaners, bleach, or alcohol-based wipes. They can discolor the surface or break down the material faster than normal wear would.
• Let it air dry fully before storing or squeezing again. Squeezing a damp squishy is the fastest way to warp its shape.

Why squishies yellow over time

Light-colored squishy toys — pastels especially — can gradually yellow with age. This is mostly caused by UV exposure and oxidation of the foam, the same reason white sneakers or old plastic electronics do it. It's not usually a sign of a low-quality product; it's just how most polyurethane foam behaves over years of exposure to sunlight and air.

The fix is prevention: keep display pieces out of direct sunlight, and store the rest of your collection somewhere dry and shaded when you're not displaying them.

Storage tips for collectors

• Keep squishies out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources like radiators or car dashboards — heat softens and can permanently deform foam.
• Store loose pieces in a breathable container rather than a fully sealed plastic bag, which can trap moisture.
• If you're displaying your collection, rotate pieces out occasionally rather than leaving the same ones in direct light indefinitely.
• Keep original packaging if you plan to resell or trade — box condition matters a lot to other collectors.
